A Therapeutic Approach to Tarot

Many people associate tarot with fortune telling and predicting the future. However, this is not how I use tarot within my work.

Instead, I approach tarot as a reflective and therapeutic tool. My practice is grounded in psychotherapy, psychodynamic understanding, and symbolic exploration. Rather than attempting to predict future events, tarot can help bring unconscious thoughts, feelings, conflicts, and patterns into awareness.

Tarot as a Symbolic Language

The images and symbols within the tarot provide a rich symbolic language. Like dreams, myths, stories, and active imagination, they can help us explore deeper aspects of ourselves that are not always accessible through rational thought alone.

As we engage with the cards, they can act as a bridge between the conscious and unconscious mind. In doing so, they often open up new perspectives and insights that might otherwise remain hidden.

Understanding Unconscious Patterns

From a psychodynamic perspective, many emotional difficulties arise from unconscious patterns. These patterns often develop through early experiences, family relationships, attachment wounds, and unresolved internal conflicts.

Although they operate largely outside our awareness, they continue to influence how we think, feel, and relate to others. Tarot can help bring these dynamics into view. By offering symbolic images and themes, the cards provide a mirror through which recurring patterns can be recognised, explored, and understood.

Reflection Rather Than Prediction

I do not view tarot cards as possessing magical powers or providing absolute answers. Instead, they offer symbolic material that can stimulate reflection, insight, and meaningful dialogue.

In many cases, the most valuable aspect of a reading is not the card itself but the client’s personal response to it. Their associations, emotions, memories, and reflections often become the focus of the work. As a result, the process encourages curiosity and self-exploration rather than certainty or prediction.

Supporting Growth and Self-Discovery

For this reason, tarot is less about predicting the future and more about understanding the present. It can help people develop greater self-awareness, recognise recurring life themes, explore different aspects of themselves, and consider new possibilities for growth and change.

Within the More Soul approach, tarot may be used alongside counselling and psychotherapy as one of several tools that support healing, self-discovery, and personal development. Some clients choose to include tarot in their work, while others prefer not to. Its use is always optional, collaborative, and grounded in psychological understanding.

Listening More Deeply to Yourself

Ultimately, the aim is not to tell people who they are or what will happen next. Instead, the purpose is to help them listen more deeply to themselves.

Through reflection and exploration, tarot can support a richer understanding of one’s inner world, personal story, and ongoing journey of growth.

“I must say that the tarot reading I had with Martin was amazing. The cards showed some interesting & thought provoking issues. The system/cards that Martin uses works really well and easy to follow. Everything was explained in a way that I understood which is great. I felt at ease throughout the whole process and the way the whole session was conducted was a safe place to discuss what needed to be discussed and explored. Thank you Martin, I will be requesting another reading soon..”
